Myopia Control
WHAT IS MYOPIA?
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is when you need glasses to see things clearly in the distance. Myopia can cause structural instability increasing the risk of retinal detachment, earlier cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Focus on Myopia control is to slow down the progression of nearsightedness. There are two ways to control myopia: one is optically, using glasses and/or contact lenses; the second option is using prescription eye drops.
MYOPIA TREATMENT METHODS
- Anti-Fatigue Lenses: These lenses have a seamless magnified power in the bottom half of the lens, to help relax the eyes when reading.
- MiSight Contact Lenses: This daily disposable lens is a customized contact that helps focus light from the periphery.
- Ortho-K: This hard lens is worn overnight to change the curvature of the cornea temporarily, correcting a child’s myopia for the day.
- Atropine Drops: These drops are taken once per day at night before bed.
If your or your child’s prescription continues to increase and your annual eye exam, myopia control could be an option for you. Our Doctors of Optometry are trained to recognize the signs of progressing myopia, and will recommend a consultation with one of our colleagues, Dr. Sameera Jhamb or Dr. Nicole Poon, to discuss the right option for you.
