WHY ARE SUNGLASSES IMPORTANT?
Many people are cheered by a bright, sunny day, but the effect of all that sunlight on the eyes is a less sunny proposition. UV and glare can create a variety of issues, from dangerous “snow blindness” to irreversible disorders that threaten your eyesight.
WHAT ARE UV RAYS?
UV stands for ultraviolet, a band of spectrum invisible to the eye. Ultraviolet light consists of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. UVC rays are stopped in Earth’s atmosphere before they reach the eye, but UVA and UVB can both reach the eye and potentially damage it.
HOW DOES UV AFFECT UNPROTECTED EYES?
UV rays can cause proteins inside the lens to become opaque or cloudy, a condition known as cataracts. Cataracts can interfere with night vision, reduce your ability to see colors, and make reading difficult; they cannot be reversed, only removed. UV exposure can also cause retinal damage, changes in the eye tissues, and a temporary but irritating “sunburn” of the cornea called photokeratitis.
HOW DO I KNOW MY GLASSES WILL PROTECT MY EYES?
Choose glasses that claim to block at least 99 percent of UV rays — UVA as well as UVB. Look for label reading “UV 400,” since this designation means that the glasses block UV rays as small as 400 nanometers, providing 100 percent eye protection. Of course you need to protect your eyes from the glare caused by the visible spectrum as well. To accomplish this, select products that block 75 to 90 percent of visible light.
WHAT ARE POLARIZED LENSES?
Polarized lenses are specially designed to filter out certain types of glare that tend to radiate upward from horizontal surfaces when sunlight bounces off of these surfaces. They are recommended for tasks such as boating, fishing, skiing, golfing, jogging, and driving. Most polarized lenses will bear a label identifying them as such.
WHAT ADDITIONAL TYPES OF PROTECTION SHOULD I CONSIDER?
If you worry about light, including harmful UV, leaking in through the sides or top of your sunglasses, wear a broad-brimmed hat to reduce some of this exposure. If you use prescription eyewear to correct your eyesight, you may also want to think about getting a pair of UV-blocking contact lenses in your prescription. These lenses may be worn alongside a non-prescription pair of sunglasses for optimum eye protection.
HYLO Dual - Lubricating Drops 10ml | 0.5mg/mL
HYLO®-DUAL:
- Offers immediate comfort (no stinging upon application), moisturizes and protects your eyes from dryness and irritation for a long time.
- Is preservative free and usually very well tolerated.
- Is phosphate free, avoiding complications like deposits on the cornea.
- Is emulgator free and lipid free, nonetheless stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film and protects the eyes against the excessive evaporation of tears
- Relieves itching and burning caused by inflammation and allergies.
How does HYLO®-DUAL work?
HYLO®-DUAL eye drops contain Sodium Hyaluronate (like in HYLO®) and Ectoine.
Ectoine, is a natural substance formed by microorganisms to protect themselves from extreme environments (e.g.: salt lakes or hot geysers). They adapt to these conditions by so-called extremolytes. Extremolytes like Ectoine are osmoprotective substances, which stabilize biological membranes.
Ectoine has a strong water-binding capacity. The water surrounding Ectoine is bound very compact, and forms a physiologic barrier. This “shield” of Ectoine and water protects cell membranes from contact with allergenic substances and against inflammatory responses to environmental stress (such as dehydration, e.g. by hyperosmolar tears, UV radiation or airborne allergens). Additionally, Ectoine has a stabilizing effect on the lipid phase of the tear film. It increases its elasticity, causes it to spread evenly over the eye surface and protects against the excessive evaporation of tears.
Burning, itching, tearing, foreign body sensation can be caused by insufficient moisture or by hypersensitivities (i.e.: allergies).
It can be difficult to differentiate between a dry and an allergic eye. In these cases HYLO®DUAL is advantageous thanks to the dual mode of action of Sodium Hyaluronate and Ectoine.
Together Sodium Hyaluronate and Ectoine provide intensive long-lasting lubrication of the ocular surface and protect against the evaporation of tears to relieve itching and burning caused by inflammation and allergies.
HYLO®-DUAL:
- Contains 0.5mg/ml Sodium Hyaluronate, 20mg/ml Ectoine, a borate buffer and water.
- Stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film and protects the eyes against the excessive evaporation of tears.
- Relieves itching and burning caused by inflammation and allergies.
Who can use HYLO®-DUAL and how often / how long?
Generally, adults and children 6 years and older can instill one drop of HYLO®-DUAL three times a day into each eye. If you apply HYLO®-DUAL more frequently (e.g.: more than 10 times per day) or suffer from more severe complaints, please consult your ophthalmologist or optometrist. HYLO®-DUAL is suitable for long-term treatment. As with all health concerns, you should consult your doctor when your symptoms persist. » Read more on how to use HYLO®-DUAL
When should you not use HYLO®-DUAL?
HYLO®-DUAL should not be used if you are sensitive to any of the ingredients.
Is HYLO®-DUAL suitable for contact lens wearers?
HYLO®-DUAL can be used while wearing hard and soft contact lenses.
